The iPhone is GSM, so Rogers will be carrying the iPhone. The SaskTel network is CDMA and will never be able to carry the iPhone, unless Apple releases a CDMA version, which is HIGHLY unlikely given that the entire world uses GSM. CDMA is only available in North America.

My guess is the same for the iPhone. The iPhone not being in Canada has verry little to do with Apple and everything to do with Rogers. Despite how much they claim they want to start selling it in Canada.

Fascinating stuff. I am always interested in these stats and hope you keep posting them often. Personally, I don’t listen to much radio these days. The old classics are played to death, which is my era (it all started with the Beatles and the 60s). Regina needs a radio station that plays album cuts, not just the so called hits. I can hear them anywhere. Personally, Z99 is horrendous. The music is awful, the morning show crew are stale and basically the station is for people whose ears don’t work well. JackFM — how many times can a person listen to Nickelback (lousy band) or BTO before turning it off. CKRM is torture to the ears. All the songs sound the same and all the singers have a nasal problem. Lite92 is now playing more of that disco dance stuff that should be banished to Z99 only. I know what I get at Z99 and I avoid it like the plague. There is no longer any preset for this station on any device I own. The Wolf, I can tolerate. I do listen mostly to CJME or CBC. However, CJME needs to stop trying to impress listeners with just plain dumb claims. I have heard them play a clip from CNN and then say something such as “That was Joe Blow from CNN reporting for NewTalk Radio” Yeah right. They seem to have a reporter and a Bureau Chief in every location on earth. They have massive departments such as the “Storm Watch Centre”, “The Business Desk”. blah blah blah. For awhile they were “Regina’s Official Weather Station”. How does a radio station get this designation. Many of their stories are “We reported first”. I heard them claim they were the first to report that War in Iraq had begun”. They even beat the stations in Iraq on reporting this. It’s idiotic claims like this that make the station look just plain stupid.

You know, microsoft just does that kinda crap. If they do mess up flickr, I have no doubt that someone else will start something similar, and everyone will just move over to that. M$ can buy everything they want, people will just keep making more stuff

I hear you

I hate silverlight, first and foremost because it does not work on linux, and thats my main OS, so for example, (not sure if you’re in Canada or not) I cannot watch ctv (or any of its shows, daily show, terminator, lost etc) online because silverlight does not work on linux. I learned about the other things after the fact

Interesting. I’m not a developer, so I was just looking at Silverlight from a user standpoint. It seems to work much better than their Windows Media format.

I tired to write a positive post because I wanted to avoid the usual, “you’re just a Microsoft hater”, backlash.

From what you pointed out, and from your links, it sounds like they are up to their old tricks.

Reminds me of that old joke that Microsoft is really just a law firm disguised as a software company.

Sorry, I’ll be the Negative Nancy then

The problem with Silverlight is that it locks developers in to using it once they start. Once a company spends the time and money creating a silverlight portal they are beholden to it. All of its upgrades and security patches become manditory, and they are at their mercy for pricing. We have all seen what Microsoft does when they have a monopoly over something. They don’t allow it to be a cheap and open method of doing business, they lock it up, sue everyone who tries to come up with something different, and charge through the nose for it.

Whats more, what if Microsoft decides to start forcing some crazy DRM or WGA method through Silverlight, if it goes anything like Vista has gone people’s computers will stop working

So don’t worry, you can still hate Microsoft I wrote about this very topic here

Groklaw also writes a very compelling article here about Microsoft’s so called ‘interoperability’
